Trevor McStay

Trevor McStay is one of the most influential Japanese-style tattoo
artists around - yesterday or today. His work and ethics are second
to none and he is also one of the friendliest tattoo artists you will
ever have the pleasure of meeting. Since Trevor is an Aussie, a lot of
us have only been able to admire him and his work from afar...but
we proudly present Trevor’s work to you, the sincere tattoo collector,
in the hopes that a new appreciation for the Australian might be
shared.
Trevor McStay has been tattooing for more than 25 years and
opened his first studio in 1981. Very early in his career Trevor realized
that in order to be the best, you had to learn from the best, so
he traveled to the US regularly to collect tattoos from his more capable
peers and true legends of tattoo- Bob Roberts, Ed Hardy, Paul
Jeffries, The Dutchman, Bill Salmon and many others...not the least
of which are some of today’s most prolific tattooers - Filip Leu, Mick
Tattoo, Mike Roper...the list goes on and on. And the effects of this
exposure can’t be ignored in Trevor’s work. He now stands alongside
these great men in tattooing’s heritage and can be counted among
some of the most influential artists today.
Yet with all these accolades, it is the character of Trevor McStay that
I admire most- as a fan and as a fellow artist. He’s an accomplished
tattooer, booked up for months in advance, he is well-respected by
his peers, and yet he remains a truly humble and accessible guy.
There’s no “rock-star” attitude with this tattooer, (though if anyone
could claim to have earned it, it’s Trevor), and it’s a refreshing thing
to behold. How many of us are confronted with some young idiot’s
attitude in a tattoo shop or on a convention floor. Two years of work
under his belt and he thinks he’s Marlon Brando or something. The
best artists, ladies and gentlemen, are the most humble guys you’ll
ever meet. You know why? Because they KNOW that there’s always
room for improvement and they constantly strive for it.
It’s an honor to present to you the work of one of my friends: Trevor
McStay. Trevor does a fair amount of traveling each year to conventions
and such and I believe he has some US dates lined up for
summer/fall of 2007. Please visit his website for more information
and feel free to email Trevor if you’d like to see about getting some
work from him.
