Tattoo Essentials: What You Need To Know

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO'S THE BEST?

1. The Internet. There are thousands of tattoo sites to help expose you to the various styles and genres of tattooing. Familiarize yourself with what is possible in this art form; it’s not limited to tribal art and butterfly patterns.

2. You could also purchase mainstream tattoo magazines at any bookstore or gas station. However, be forewarned that many of these mags represent the potential of the art poorly, and don’t always represent the best tattoos or tattooers available to you. Continue buying this magazine and you are certain to be exposed to the very best artists in the world. Remember, this magazine’s content was originally created for the tattoo professional. This is the high watermark of excellence within the tattoo industry.

3. You could visit regional tattoo conventions to gain the exposure you need to good art. Conventions usually draw some truly great talent from all over the world. This is a good option for getting a world class tattoo without traveling all over the world to get it.

4. The most common way, locally, is to check out the artists’ portfolios at the studio you go to. If they don’t have a book of their work or they offer some lame excuse as to why it isn’t available—get the hell out of there- fast! You are either dealing with someone too new to tattooing to have a collection of their tattoos or someone who sucks so badly they won’t show their work to paying customers. They are banking on your ignorance of what to look for to get them business. Let’s not allow that any longer. Tattooing is overrun with hacks these days, and with all the tattoo (un)reality shows permeating our television sets, it’s inevitable that more and more people will want to do this for a living. So the business grows...but the talent shrinks. And here’s a secret: only about 10-20% of practicing tattooers actually tattoo worth a damn! No joke! This is what those people don’t want you to know. And out of that group, only about 10% of them are good enough and creative enough to be considered the best in the world. Choose wisely.
